Question

Can an Employer Reject Your Resignation in Singapore?

Short answer

No. Singapore MOM states that an employer cannot reject an employee’s resignation. You may resign at any time, but you must still give notice in writing and either serve the required notice period or, where applicable, pay salary in lieu. Refusing to sign or acknowledge the letter does not make resignation a request for permission. Keep proof of delivery, check the contract notice clause, and confirm the notice dates. Use the date calculator if you will serve notice, or salary-in-lieu review if you may leave earlier.

Official rule

MOM states that an employer cannot reject a resignation and that employees have the right to resign at any time by serving the required notice or paying salary in lieu of notice. MOM also says notice must be given in writing.

Key points

  • Resignation is not conditional on the employer accepting it.
  • Written delivery and proof of delivery help prevent disputes.
  • The contract or MOM default table determines the required notice period.
  • Serving notice and paying salary in lieu are different calculator tasks.

Worked example

HR does not acknowledge the resignation

An employee emails a written resignation and the contract requires one month of notice. HR says the company does not accept it. Under MOM’s rule, that refusal does not cancel the resignation; the employee should keep delivery evidence and still serve the required notice or resolve salary in lieu where applicable.

What changes the answer

  • • The notice period stated in the contract or MOM default notice table.
  • • Whether the employee will serve notice in full or end employment earlier.
  • • Any dispute about when written notice was delivered.

What to confirm with HR

  • • What date does HR record as the written notice date?
  • • What notice clause or default notice period applies?
  • • What are the confirmed last working day and employment end date?

FAQ

Does my employer have to sign my resignation letter?
MOM recommends asking the employer to acknowledge the notice to reduce misunderstandings, but the employer cannot reject the resignation. Keep evidence of written delivery.
Can I leave immediately after resigning?
Not automatically. You generally need to serve the required notice or pay salary in lieu where applicable, unless another valid arrangement or rule applies.
